Healthcare workers at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) Hospital were celebrated during a vibrant Nurses Week event that brought together medical professionals, hospital management, stakeholders, and staff members in recognition of the critical role nurses play in patient care and public health.
The colorful ceremony, themed: ‘Empowered nurses save lives,’ was held at the hospital grounds, and graced by the facility’s Chief Medical Officer(CMO) Dr. Patrick Mburugu. He applauded nurses for their unwavering dedication, compassion, and resilience in delivering quality healthcare services despite the growing demands in the medical sector.
Dr. Mburugu described nurses as the “heartbeat of the healthcare system,” noting that their professionalism and sacrifice continue to transform lives every day.
“Nurses are often the first to attend to patients and the last to leave their bedside. Their commitment, empathy, and courage deserve not only recognition every single day,” acknowledged Dr. Mburugu.
“As leadership, we remain committed to supporting nurses through better working environments, continuous professional development, adequate resources and recognition of your vital role in healthcare,” he added.
On her part, the Nursing Manager, Ms. Susan Ngure thanked the hospital administration for recognizing nurses and investing in their growth and well-being. She emphasized that teamwork, compassion, and continuous learning remain key pillars in the nursing profession.
She further praised the nursing staff for their dedication, professionalism, and compassionate service to patients, describing them as the backbone of the hospital’s healthcare delivery system. She noted that nurses continue to play a critical role in saving lives, comforting patients, and ensuring quality healthcare services are delivered efficiently despite the challenges faced in the medical profession.
“Nursing is more than a profession; it is a calling that requires patience, humanity, and sacrifice. Today’s celebration reminds us that our efforts are valued and appreciated,” said Ms. Ngure.

While lauding nurses for their unwavering commitment, discipline, and compassionate care, the senior nursing officer, Ms. Catherine Maleche said nurses continue to serve tirelessly on the frontline, often working under immense pressure to ensure patients receive quality and dignified care.
“Nursing is a profession built on compassion, sacrifice, and dedication. Every day, nurses go beyond their call of duty to provide hope, comfort, and healing to patients and their families,” said Ms. Maleche.
“As healthcare continues to evolve, nurses must remain committed to excellence, innovation, and lifelong learning in order to meet the growing needs of our patients and communities,” she added.
She further thanked the hospital management and the Chief Medical Officer for recognizing and appreciating nurses through the Nurses Week celebrations, noting that such recognition motivates healthcare workers to continue serving with passion and dedication.
