JKUAT Equips Student Leaders with Transformative Leadership Skills – Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology

Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) successfully conducted a three-day leadership training program for student club leaders, aimed at nurturing the next generation of transformative leaders.

The training, spearheaded by the Jomo Kenyatta University Students Association (JKUSA) under the Office of the Dean of Students, sought to equip student leaders with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to lead effectively and responsibly within the university and beyond.

Bringing together over 100 representatives from various student clubs and associations, the program provided intensive capacity-building sessions designed to strengthen their ability to serve both the university community and society at large.

Held from Wednesday, 17 to Friday, 19 September 2025, the training covered a wide range of topics including strategic leadership, effective communication, etiquette and protocol, financial management, and interpersonal relations.

While officially opening the program, the Deputy Dean of Students, Prof. John Githiri, commended the participants for their commitment to personal and collective growth. He emphasized the importance of strong leadership in shaping vibrant student communities.

“Leadership is not just about titles; it is about service, vision, and responsibility. By empowering our student leaders, we are investing in a culture of accountability, innovation, and excellence that will impact not just our university but the nation as a whole,” said Prof. Githiri.

Expressing gratitude to the university administration for prioritizing student leadership development, Mr. Victor Osiolo, JKUSA Academic Secretary and lead organizer of the training, urged participants to maximize the opportunity.

“This program will be eye-opening and empowering. We shall gain skills that go beyond running clubs and associations; skills that will help us in our careers, in society, and in life,” Mr. Osiolo noted.

On his part, the lead trainer, Prof. Karanja Kabare, lauded the students’ enthusiasm and active participation, stressing that the lessons gained would have a lasting impact by bridging academic excellence with practical leadership skills.

“Leadership is a continuous journey of learning, and I am impressed by the commitment you as student club leaders have shown. The knowledge shared on strategic leadership, financial management, and etiquette, among others, is meant to empower you not only as club leaders but also as future professionals and citizens,” Prof. Karanja remarked.

Mr. Stephen Mburu, leader of the JKUAT Biochemistry Club, described the initiative as both timely and transformative. He expressed confidence that the lessons learned would help student leaders foster stronger engagement and uphold professionalism in their roles.

The training forms part of JKUAT’s broader commitment to holistic education by blending academic knowledge with leadership and life skills, thereby preparing students to excel both within the university and in their future endeavors.
