As the curtain begins to fall on their university journey, final-year students at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) were given a unique opportunity to prepare for life beyond the classroom through a two-day Graduate Transition Training organized by the JKUAT Students Association (JKUSA).

The interactive programme equipped soon-to-be graduates with essential skills in career development, personal finance, entrepreneurship, and professional networking ensuring they are ready to navigate the dynamic world of work and leadership with confidence.

Throughout the sessions, various speakers drawn from industry, academia, and alumni circles shared practical insights and real-world experiences aimed at helping the students bridge the gap between academic learning and the demands of professional life.

Kelvin Muriungi, a successful entrepreneur and JKUAT alumnus, encouraged the students to embrace resilience, innovation, and continuous learning as they step into the job market.

Drawing from his own journey of building a thriving IT business from the ground up, he reminded the students that success often comes through persistence and adaptability.

“Your degree gives you a foundation, but your attitude, creativity, and willingness to grow will determine how far you go,” Mr. Muriungi noted.

Dr. Rebecca Maina from the College of Human Resource Development, JKUAT who led the panel discussion, underscored the importance of continuous personal development and adaptability in today’s rapidly evolving job market.

She encouraged the students to cultivate soft skills such as communication, teamwork, and emotional intelligence qualities that complement technical knowledge and distinguish exceptional professionals in any field.

Emily Siro, a fourth-year Human Resource Management student, said that the event was both eye-opening and empowering, giving her a clearer understanding of what to expect after graduation.

She added that the sessions helped her reflect on her career goals and how to position herself strategically in the competitive job market.

“This was a huge opportunity for me to interrogate my strengths, weaknesses, and aspirations. I’ve learned that success after graduation is not just about having a degree, but about understanding who you are, what you can offer, and how you can keep growing in a changing world,” Emily said.

Victor Osiolo, the JKUSA Academic Secretary, described the training as an empowering experience for the finalists, noting that it had equipped them with essential skills and insights to confidently step into the world beyond campus.

By blending academic knowledge with practical life skills, the initiative empowered students to take charge of their careers and contribute meaningfully to society.
