Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) has been designated as a regional hub for software testing and quality assurance under a new partnership with the International Software Testing Qualifications Board (ISTQB).
The partnership was announced at the university’s 20th Scientific Technological and Industrialization Conference held on March 26-27, 2026.
Under the partnership, JKUAT becomes the first university in the region to offer ISTQB certification, with the programme anchored in the School of Computing and Information Technology.
Through the initiative, students will graduate with internationally recognized competencies in software testing and quality assurance, strengthening the link between academic theory and industry training.
The collaboration comes at a time when demand for skilled technology professionals continues to grow across sectors such as fintech, e-government, health systems, and artificial intelligence, where the need for reliable and secure digital systems remains critical.
Speaking during the forum, Prof. Salome Bukachi, who represented ISTQB, stated that integrating ISTQB standards into JKUAT’s programmes will equip graduates with globally recognized skills, preparing them to meet industry demands and compete in international markets.
“Incorporating ISTQB standards into the JKUAT’s curricula ensures that students acquire skills recognized worldwide, allowing them to meet industry expectations and contribute effectively in technology-driven sectors,” Prof. Bukachi said.
She also noted that the hub will support the adoption of structured testing practices and quality engineering principles, enabling organizations to develop reliable and scalable digital solutions, reduce system failures, and build trust with users.
Prof. Salome said early exposure to professional certification will give students a competitive edge by strengthening employability and providing clear career pathways in software quality and testing.
The Director of the School of Computing and Information Technology, Dr. Agnes Mindila, said that professional certification bridges the gap between academic knowledge and industry practice, giving students a clear path to careers in software quality and testing.
“This initiative goes beyond the classroom. It fosters a network that unites education, industry, and certification, which is essential for building a strong technology workforce across Africa,” she added.
Dr. Mindila also noted that the certification will open up international markets for JKUAT graduates, emphasizing that this is an era to leverage technology to build capacity and strengthen skills.
“By equipping our graduates with internationally recognized skills, we are creating opportunities not just locally, but across borders, while harnessing technology to enhance Africa’s capacity and competitiveness,” she said.
