A delegation from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), led by Dr. Reuben Thuo, Principal of the College of Health Sciences, met with the Principal Secretary for Medical Services, Dr. Ouma Oluga on June 13, 2025, to review progress on the establishment of the National Assistive Technology Centre of Excellence.

The Centre, to be hosted at JKUAT with support from the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization (WHO), is envisioned as a regional hub to expand access to assistive technologies for persons with disabilities in Kenya and the broader region.

It will support the development of a national assistive technology policy or programme, contribute to the realization of Universal Health Coverage (UHC), and advance the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

The Centre will address barriers such as limited access to assistive devices, lack of trained specialists, and low awareness. It will also focus on local manufacturing, innovation, and delivery of tailored solutions to meet the diverse needs of persons with disabilities.

The delegation included Dr. Mwangi Matheri, Chair of Rehabilitation Science, and Dr. Musa Mohammed, a faculty member in the Department of Surgery and Head of Linkages at the College of Health Sciences.
