Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), through the She-Tech-Nexus Africa Club, marked the International Girls in ICT Day on April 24, 2025, to empower young women to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

Held under the global theme “Bridging All Divides for an Inclusive Digital Transformation,” the event focused on encouraging girls to explore opportunities in ICT, equipping them with skills to build strong professional profiles, and challenging cultural norms that often limit their participation in the tech space.

Participants also used the platform to discuss challenges facing the girl child in school and received mentorship to help them navigate their academic and career paths.

While speaking during the event, Prof. Catherine Kunyanga, Associate Dean, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Nairobi, urged students to believe in themselves, remain focused, and stay committed to their careers. She encouraged the girls to choose positive role models to guide and mentor them.

“In university, you have equal opportunity whether you’re a girl or a boy. The institution doesn’t favour anyone. I advise you to step up and compete at the same level as the boys, especially in engineering and technology courses which have long been dominated by men,” said Prof. Kunyanga.

Prof. Anthony Waititu, Dean, School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences, echoed the importance of including more girls in technology-related studies, noting that many shy away from such courses. He urged them to work hard both in class and outside by joining clubs that offer opportunities to build soft skills.

“Work very hard, because the world we live in today is highly competitive. No one wants to be left behind whether male or female. Believe in yourselves and don’t expect free things. Nothing comes for free,” concluded Prof. Waititu.

Ms. Wairimu Gichaiya, Patron of the She-Tech-Nexus Club and its founder, thanked members for their efforts in raising awareness about the role of girls in ICT. She encouraged them to stay self-motivated and identify their individual strengths.

“As a girl, stay aggressive. Create ideas for yourself. Through innovation, you can stand out. As a club, we are ready to support good ideas that can help you succeed,” said Ms. Gichaiya.

Joan Kinoti, a BSc. Computer Science student, expressed gratitude to the club for uniting girls and creating a platform to learn problem-solving and STEM-related skills. She advised her peers to find side projects they’re passionate about.

“Outside class, make sure you’re building something. It doesn’t have to be big. Join different groups, attend events, and network. Take advantage of social media—use it as your stepping stone,” said Ms. Kinoti.
