Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) is set to benefit from the construction of a modern student hostel with a capacity of 1,680 under the Government’s Affordable Housing Programme. The new facility is expected to greatly improve on-campus accommodation against expanding number of student population.

The groundbreaking ceremony, held on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, at the University’s main campus in Juja, was led by JKUAT Chair of Council, Dr. Micah Onsando, Mr. Don Kagicha, Regional Director, Nairobi Metropolitan – State Department for Housing and Urban Development, and the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Victoria Ngumi. The event marked the official commencement of construction at the designated site for the new student hostel.

The year-long project, being implemented under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development  will deliver two modern hostel blocks, each consisting of approximately 240 units, (200 quad rooms and 40 single rooms); with a total capacity to accommodate 1680 students. The complex will also feature contemporary amenities aimed at enhancing student comfort, safety, and overall campus living experience.

Eng. Gabriel Tuta from the State Department of Housing takes the team through the conceptual building plans.

The hostel worth about KSh 775 million will be developed in phases, incorporating sustainable building practices and modern architectural standards. Once completed, the facility is expected to significantly ease accommodation pressure on campus, reduce reliance on off-campus housing, and provide students with a more secure, convenient, and conducive environment for academic and social life.

Speaking during the ceremony, Dr. Micah Onsando lauded the project noting that as the pioneering institution, JKUAT stands to gain substantial benefits. He emphasized that improved on-campus accommodation is crucial for supporting student welfare, enhancing academic focus, and alleviating the challenges posed by inadequate or distant housing options.

“As a Council, we are keen to ensure that we play an important role in supporting the University across various capacities, and this project is a testament to that commitment. By investing in quality student housing, we are not only improving the learning environment but also contributing to the holistic growth and success of our students”, said Dr Onsando.

Dr. Onsando also extended his appreciation to the President, Dr. William Ruto, for prioritizing the development of student infrastructure through the Affordable Housing Programme. He noted that the initiative demonstrates the Government’s commitment to improving learning environments and ensuring that universities are equipped to support growing student populations.

The Vice Chancellor Prof. Victoria Ngumi noted that the new hostels will significantly support the growing student population by easing accommodation pressures, enhancing campus life, and providing a safe and conducive environment for learning.

“JKUAT has long faced a severe shortage of on-campus accommodation, with only 2,600 of its 35,000 students housed on campus. The majority must find off-campus housing, often at high cost and in conditions that can affect their safety, health, and studies. This narrative is set to change,” said Prof. Ngumi.

The Vice Chancellor  added that, “ the accommodation complex is not just a building; it is a powerful statement of the Government’s commitment to improving student welfare and creating an environment where learning can truly thrive”.

Mr. Don Kagicha, Regional Director, Nairobi Metropolitan- State Department for Housing and Urban Development (Kenya), said that the project aligns with the Government’s broader vision of providing affordable, quality student housing nationwide.

Mr. Kagicha noted that the Affordable Housing Programme seeks, among other objectives, to extend support to public institutions of higher learning and other key sectors, ensuring students have access to safe, modern, and conducive living environments.
