
Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the United States based, The Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) to enhance education, research, and technological innovation in the field of imaging science.
The MOU signed through College of Pure and Applied sciences (COPAS)’s Physics Department is a significant step towards

introducing a course in imaging science. Under the MOU, students and researchers will have access to state-of-the-art imaging technology, joint research projects, and industry-driven training programs.
The partnership which commenced on Monday, February 3, 2025 also seeks to foster collaboration in areas such as medical imaging, remote sensing, computer vision, and artificial intelligence-driven image processing.
Imaging science provides the techniques and technologies used to create, analyze, and process images. It also combines elements of physics, computer science, mathematics, and engineering to improve how images are captured, processed, and interpreted.
Speaking during the MOU signing event, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (DVC) in charge of Academic Affairs, Prof. Robert Kinyua expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, saying it is expected to facilitate joint research initiatives, student exchange programs, and industry collaborations, with a focus on healthcare, space research, environmental monitoring, and security applications.
“This collaboration will open new opportunities for our students and faculty, equipping them with cutting-edge knowledge and skills in imaging science. It also aligns with our commitment to fostering technological advancements that benefit society,” acknowledged Prof. Kinyua.

On his part, the RIT team representative Prof. Anthony Vodacek, highlighted the impact of the agreement, saying that Imaging Science plays a critical role in various industries. Through this MOU, RIT, aims to drive innovation and contribute to global advancements in imaging technology.
“Imaging science plays a crucial role in healthcare, space exploration, environmental monitoring, artificial intelligence, and countless other sectors,”. Through this collaboration, we aim to provide cutting-edge research opportunities, hands-on training, and access to advanced imaging technologies that will empower the next generation of scientists and innovators,” stated Prof. Vodacek.
Further, the project lead person and a senior lecturer at the Physics Department, Dr. Calvine Ominde who also was recently appointed as the Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS) Ambassador in Kenya, thanked RIT for the collaboration saying that he believes that this initiative will position JKUAT as a leader in imaging science education and research.
“We strongly believe in the power of collaboration. By combining our expertise within the department, we can drive innovation, tackle real-world challenges, and contribute to technological advancements that will benefit society at large,” said Dr. Ominde.
The collaboration is set to commence immediately, with upcoming projects including specialized workshops, research grants, and hands-on training in advanced imaging systems.
