JKUAT, Nanjing University in Talks to Foster Global Collaboration

Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) and Nanjing University have begun discussions on a potential collaboration aimed at fostering academic exchange, joint research, and innovation.

The talks, held on 8 August 2025, mark the start of what could be a transformative partnership, leveraging the strengths of both institutions to advance scientific research, promote technology transfer, and enhance capacity building for students and faculty alike.

The meeting, attended by faculty heads from Nanjing University alongside members of the JKUAT management, provided an opportunity to explore shared interests and identify avenues for impactful collaboration.

Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Robert Kinyua, emphasized JKUAT’s commitment to expanding its global partnerships as part of a broader strategy to enhance academic excellence, foster cutting-edge research, and expose students and faculty to diverse international perspectives.

“We encourage partnerships that not only broaden our academic horizons but also deliver tangible solutions to societal challenges. Collaborations such as the one with Nanjing University have the potential to drive innovation, knowledge exchange, and mutual growth,” Prof. Kinyua said.

The Acting Vice Chancellor noted that strengthening the university’s reach through strategic collaborations remains central to its mission of building global networks, enhancing research capacity, and enriching academic experiences.

Leading the delegation, Prof. Tan Tieniu, President and Chair of the CPC Council of Nanjing University, reaffirmed his institution’s commitment to expanding its international student population.

“Our visit today is guided by plans to provide students with opportunities to study at our university through our International Fellowship Initiative. This program will foster student exchange and strengthen academic and cultural ties between our institutions,” said Prof. Tan.

As one of the oldest and most prestigious higher education institutions in China, he added, Nanjing University takes pride in its rich academic heritage and global outlook qualities that underpin its commitment to excellence and international collaboration.

Prof. Tan also lauded JKUAT’s strong record in research, innovation, and community engagement, noting that these achievements provide a solid foundation for a meaningful, mutually beneficial partnership.

As part of their visit, the delegation toured the Sino-Africa Joint Research Centre (SAJOREC), where they were briefed by the SAJOREC Director, Prof Robert Gituru on ongoing collaborative projects and shown facilities supporting advanced research in agriculture, biodiversity, and environmental conservation.
