The Department of Pure and Applied Mathematics (PAM) at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Kenya Cyber Security and Forensic Association (KSCFA) in a bid to facilitate the development of specialized training programs, research initiatives, and capacity-building efforts in the field of cybersecurity and digital forensics.
The partnership which commenced on Friday, August 23, 2024 not only aims at enhancing cybersecurity education and research at JKUAT by leveraging the expertise of KCSFA in combating cyber threats but also aligning with JKUAT’s broader educational objectives in these critical areas.
Further, the partnership will see PAM and KSCFA work together to develop specialized courses and training programs tailored to meet the growing demand for cybersecurity professionals in Kenya. Students will benefit from practical experience through internships, workshops, and hands-on training sessions facilitated by industry experts from KSCFA.
Speaking during the signing event, the Chair of Department, Dr. Lewis Nyaga said that, the MOU reflects JKUAT’s commitment to advancing cybersecurity education in Kenya, ensuring that students and professionals are well-equipped to tackle emerging cyber threats. The partnership with KCSFA will also provide students with practical exposure and networking opportunities in the cybersecurity industry.
“Through this MoU, both institutions seek to enhance research, training, and capacity building in cybersecurity, a field
that is increasingly critical in today’s digital landscape. The collaboration is expected to benefit both students and professionals involved in cybersecurity,” said Dr. Nyaga. “This MOU marks a significant milestone for our department. By partnering with KSCFA, we are ensuring that our curriculum remains relevant and that our students are well-prepared to protect and secure our nation’s digital infrastructure,” he added.
On his part, the KSCFA chairman Mr. Keniz Agira expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, noting that it aligns with the association’s mission to promote cybersecurity awareness and education across the country. He further noted that, the MOU also includes provisions for joint research initiatives, where students and faculties from JKUAT will collaborate with KSCFA members on cutting-edge cybersecurity projects. These initiatives are expected to contribute to national efforts in combating cyber threats and enhancing digital forensic capabilities.
“We are excited to work closely with JKUAT. Together, we will foster a new generation of cybersecurity experts who will safeguard our digital future,” said Mr. Agira.
The partnership between PAM and KSCFA underscores the critical role that academic-industry collaborations play in addressing the dynamic challenges of cybersecurity. Both institutions expressed confidence that this MOU will set a precedent for future collaborations aimed at fortifying Kenya’s cybersecurity landscape.
