
The President of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Dr. Tanaka Akihiko, has reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to strengthen historic partnership with Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), lauding the university for its outstanding contribution to research, innovation and national development.
Dr. Tanaka, who was accompanied by senior officials from JICA and the Embassy of Japan, paid a courtesy call to JKUAT, on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, where he was received by Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic Affairs, Prof. Robert Kinyua on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Victoria Wambui Ngumi.
Prof. Kinyua presented an overview of JKUAT, highlighting the university’s core strengths rooted in quality training, impactful research, and a well-established culture of entrepreneurship. He said, JKUAT’s sustained focus on academic excellence and alignment with industry needs has, over time, positioned it as one of the most sought-after institutions of higher learning by high school graduates in Kenya.
One of the key collaborative initiatives between JKUAT and JICA is the In-Country Training Programme, which Prof. Kinyua underscored as a key driver of technology transfer and capacity building within Kenyan institutions.
He noted that through the JICA-supported programme, JKUAT has successfully equipped professionals with practical skills and advanced knowledge tailored to the country’s development priorities.
Prof. Kinyua emphasized that such initiatives have significantly enhanced the university’s ability to support government efforts and contribute meaningfully to Kenya’s national development agenda, particularly in the sectors of agriculture, manufacturing, health, and ICT.
Dr. Tanaka commended JKUAT for its exemplary track record, noting that the university has emerged as a model institution in Africa for applied research, innovation, and regional development. He singled out JKUAT’s high number of patents and innovations as a testament to its vibrant research ecosystem and deep commitment to solving real-world challenges.
Also making key presentations during the engagement were Deputy Vice Chancellor, Administration and Finance, Prof. Bernard Ikua, who outlined strategic initiatives to ensure operational sustainability and prudent financial management at the institution.
Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor, Research, Production and Extension, Dr. Hiram Ndiritu, highlighted JKUAT’s expanding research output, innovation hubs, and productive industry linkages, which have cemented the university’s role as a thought leader in academia, resulting in multiple partnerships.
Also in attendance were Prof. Daniel Sila, Principal of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources; Dr. Reuben Thuo, Principal of the College of Health Sciences; and Prof. George Thiong’o, Principal of the College of Pure and Applied Sciences.
