JICA and JKUAT Explore New Collaboration Pathways

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) are in talks to roll out a new technical cooperation project. The project has the node of the government of Japan aims at enhancing JKUAT’s capacity in applied research and innovation. The partnership will not only focus on improving the university’s infrastructure but also the curriculum and training programs in fields such as agricultural engineering, renewable energy, and information technology.

Acting Vice Chancellor Prof. Bernard Ikua, expressed gratitude for JICA’s continued support to JKUAT, highlighting the transformative impact of past collaborations.  He further noted that this new project will position JKUAT as a regional hub for science and technology, equipping students and faculty with the skills needed to drive sustainable development.

“The partnership builds on a long-standing relationship between JICA and JKUAT, which began in the 1980s with the establishment of the university’s agricultural engineering programs. Over the years, JICA has played a pivotal role in enhancing JKUAT’s academic and research capabilities,” said Prof. Ikua.

social development. By fostering innovation and entrepreneurship, the project is expected to create new opportunities for students, researchers, and industry professionals alike,” he added.

On his part, the Senior Deputy Director, Human Development Department of JICA Mr. Mochizuki Hiroshi emphasized the importance of technical cooperation in addressing global challenges. Stating that this project reflects JICA’s commitment to supporting Kenya’s Vision 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through the promotion of science and technology.

In readiness for the project, both JICA and JKUAT have reaffirmed commitment to foster a sustainable and inclusive future through education, research, and technology. The initiative will further boost the partnership between Japan and Kenya thereby serving as a model for international cooperation in higher education and development.
