Dr. Paul Njogu has officially been appointed as the new Director of the Institute of Energy and Environmental Technology (IEET), ushering in a new chapter for the institute based at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT). He is set to take the reins from Prof. Joseph Kamau, who’s impactful six-year tenure was celebrated during a special farewell and handing-over ceremony held on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, at the Institute’s main laboratory.
The event served both as a tribute to Prof. Kamau’s dedicated leadership and as a moment of anticipation for IEET’s future. Faculty, staff, and students gathered to reflect on the progress made under his guidance, particularly in renewable energy research, climate change adaptation, environmental sustainability, and clean technology innovation.
In his remarks, Prof. Kamau expressed deep gratitude to Vice Chancellor Prof. Victoria Ngumi for the opportunity to lead IEET.
“Over the past six years, I’ve been fortunate to witness firsthand the dedication and passion that fuel this institute,” he said. “From the unwavering commitment of our faculty to the tireless efforts of our staff and the brilliance of our students it’s been an incredible journey.”
He went on to highlight key milestones achieved under his leadership, including the establishment of state-of-the-art research laboratories, the expansion of international collaborations, the launch of new academic programs, and a growing role in shaping national energy and environmental policy.
“Leading IEET has been a profound honor and responsibility,” Prof. Kamau reflected. “I am immensely proud of what we’ve accomplished together. The global challenges in energy and the environment call for bold ideas and collective action an area in which I believe IEET will continue to lead.”
Stepping into the role, Dr. Paul Njogu, an esteemed academic known for his pioneering work in Environmental Legislation and Management, shared his appreciation and vision for the Institute’s future.
“I am humbled to take on this role and committed to advancing the Institute’s mission,” he said. “We will deepen our research
impact, strengthen community engagement, and cultivate solutions that address both global and local environmental challenges.”
Under their leadership, the institute spearheaded major initiatives in solar energy, waste-to-energy systems, carbon capture, and sustainable water treatment. These efforts have not only resulted in significant scientific breakthroughs but have also contributed to shaping the best international practices and policy frameworks.
As IEET embarks on this new chapter, its guiding values of innovation, collaboration, and environmental stewardship remain firmly at the heart of its mission ensuring that the Institute continues to lead in sustainable development and scientific excellence.
