Nine trainees from various professional sectors concluded a three-week Environmental Social Impact Assessment and Environmental Audit (ESIA/EA) training by JKUAT’s Institute of Energy and Environmental Technology (IEET), Tuesday, May 10, 2022.

The training was significant in equipping the participants with skills and knowledge in evaluating and mitigating the impact on the environment of a proposed project or programme prior to its commencement.

The short course training which was crucial in equipping the trainees with critical environmental assessment skills will also act as an avenue for the trainees in acquiring environmental auditing certificates from the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA).

Director IEET, Prof. Joseph Kamau, urged the participants to use the skills acquired to improve the welfare of their communities. He underscored the importance of the training saying the skills acquired from this training will be necessary for mitigating negative impacts brought about by the various projects and programs on our environment.

“With the knowledge and skills gained in this training, you are at the top of your game, and are at hand to share these skills with others. Interact and create social networks that will lead to new collaborations, which will, in turn, result in the development of our nation and the world at large,” he advised.

Speaking during the event, one of the IEET Senior researchers, Dr. Paul Njogu lauded the trainees for their invaluable participation throughout the program and commended their desire to learn more. He prevailed on them to enroll for other courses offered at the Institute.

“With the myriad of issues affecting the environment today, this training was intended and formulated to give you hands-on skills to deal with the conservation of our environment,” he asserted.

On her part, Ms. Naomi Wanja, one of the participants thanked IEET on behalf of the candidates for offering the crucial and educative course which would go miles at bettering life, especially at the local level.

Also in attendance were Senior Research Fellow Dr. Margret Gichuhi, Assistant Registrar IEET Mr. Vitals Opondo, the course coordinator, Ms. Purity Njeru, and Technologist Mr. Peter Waithaka.

The course ran from April 19 to May 10, 2022, and covered course work, practicals and field study.
