Huawei has reaffirmed its partnership with Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) by launching a new recruitment initiative aimed at cultivating ICT innovation.

Building on a successful collaboration, the initiative is designed to equip Kenya’s next generation of ICT professionals with industry-aligned skills through Huawei’s comprehensive training and mentorship programs.

JKUAT Vice Chancellor Prof. Victoria Wambui Ngumi, on October 31, 2024, welcomed Huawei representatives, including Regional Lead Tuta Leng, to discuss further alignment of the university’s ICT curriculum with evolving industry standards. Prof. Ngumi expressed appreciation for Huawei’s ongoing support, underscoring its role in bolstering JKUAT’s reputation as a leader in ICT education and preparing students to excel in a global marketplace.

During the visit, Huawei led a rigorous recruitment process, assessing students on both their theoretical knowledge and practical ICT skills. This process serves as an entry point for students into Huawei’s prestigious ICT competitions, covering areas such as networking, cloud computing, and cybersecurity.

Mr. Leng, spoke to the company’s commitment to nurturing young Kenyan talent and supporting the country’s ICT landscape. He noted that Huawei aims not only to provide technical skills but also to inspire a mindset of innovation and resilience

The event also celebrated two standout students, Luiz Kinyua and Wendy Njeri, who excelled in recent regional competitions. Kinyua earned first place in the Network Track, while Njeri achieved second in the Computing Track. Their success stories served as inspiration, as both shared practical advice and insights into their competition journey.

Dr. Francis Waititu, Chair of the Department of Computing, encouraged students to leverage the competition for personal and professional growth noting that engaging in the platform not “only refines your technical skills but also provides a global perspective that’s essential for career growth”.

Caroline Mina Kethi, a fourth-year Business Computing student, shared her enthusiasm for the competition’s unique advantages.

“This competition offers incredible opportunities. Securing a spot in Huawei’s Management Trainee Program, earning certifications, and even winning a trip to China has been an invaluable experience,” said Kethi.

The Huawei-JKUAT partnership, established several years ago, has continuously bridged the gap between academic learning and practical application. Through this partnership, Huawei is providing students with hands-on training, mentorship, and collaborative opportunities that equip them with essential skills for today’s workforce.
