Geology Professor Pens Final Book

Bernard Kipsang Rop, an Associate Professor of Geology at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, has published the final book in a series based on commonly encountered major minerals and rocks on quarrying and mining sites.

The new publication, titled “Properties, Occurrences and Uses of Minerals and Rocks: A Comparative Illustrative Approach,” is a culmination of his vast knowledge and expertise in the field of Applied Geology since he began his career in 1982 as a Geologist.

Prof. Rop who is the Former Commissioner of Mines & Geology as well as inaugural Chairman; Mining, Materials and Petroleum Engineering Department (MMPE) at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture & Technology, has co-authored the book with Prof. Digne Edmond Rwabuhungu Rwatangabo, an Associate Professor of Geology and Dean of the School of Mining & Geology at University of Rwanda and Geologist Namwiba Wycliffe Habel, Former Senior Technologist; School of Engineering and Technology,  Department of Building and Civil Engineering, Machakos University, Machakos, Kenya.

The book is designed for certificate and diploma-level learners in Geology, covering Mineralogy, Petrology, and Structural Geology. It includes detailed comparative illustrations of schematic drawings and field images and provides questions for applying concepts to field situations. The knowledge and skills acquired will serve as a foundation for further academic pursuits and benefit Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM) learners as well as TIVET based programmes.

The publication is also a valuable resource for Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM) learners, Construction Engineers, and professionals seeking to address the practical challenges facing the mining industry. Its contents are comprehensive and suitable for appraisal programs in the mining sector in Kenya and beyond.

Prof. Rop described the 257-page book as the final piece of the jigsaw, explaining that it builds upon the level of detail in his previous books.

“This is the most striking of my previous books. It has about 180 pages of detailed minerals and rocks comparative illustrations,” said Prof. Rop

Prof. Rop expressed his gratitude to the administrations of JKUAT, the University of Rwanda, and Machakos University for creating a conducive environment for collaborations that enabled the co-authors to complete the book project.
