Dr. Lucy Kananu Murungi, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Horticulture and Food Security (HFS), has been elected as Dean, School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences (SOAES), College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (COANRE).

During the highly contested elections held on August 10, 2023, Dr. Murungi won with a majority of the vote, against her HFS colleagues Prof. Stephen Githiri and Prof. George Mamati.

In his congratulatory remarks, the Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs, Prof. Thuku Thiongó commended the faculty for engaging and leading in research. He called upon the contenders to collaborate with Dr. Kananu in ensuring the School retains its reputation as a research powerhouse recognized globally.

While congratulating Dr. Murungi, the Acting Registrar, Academic Affairs, Dr. Aggrey Wanyama noted that the School would indeed flourish under her leadership, adding that her experience would be instrumental in marketing the Agriculture courses to attract more students.

Dr. Kananu, who felt elated and humbled by the results of the election, thanked her colleagues for their support and confidence in her abilities and pledged her commitment to foster a consultative environment where ideas will be cultivated and nurtured and therefore, promote research which the school is known for.

Her vision for SOAES is to become a center of excellence in the advancement of inclusive and action-oriented training, research, outreach, and entrepreneurship in the field of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences which is vital in creating impact at the industry and community level.

Dr. Kananu is an accomplished researcher. As of August 2023, is the best entomology and pesticide scientist in JKUAT and ranks third in Kenya, according to the Alper-Doger (AD) Scientific Index, an international ranking and analysis system that provides evaluations of journals and universities.

This is based on the scientific performance and the added value of the scientific productivity of individual scientists.

She is a JKUAT alumna who studied Horticulture from Bachelor’s to Ph.D. level and also completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE).

Dr. Kananu will be extending her leadership role at the School having served as the Chairperson, HFS from 2019 to 2023. She has held several leadership positions at the Horticultural Association of Kenya (HAK), where she is the internal auditor.

She takes over from Prof. Elijah Ateka and will officially assume office on August 17, 2023.
