Excellent Performance at International Trade Fair

Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture has stamped its authority in its core mandate of training and research following spectacular performance at the 2012 Nairobi International Trade Fair that opened its doors to the public, Tuesday, October 2, 2012. JKUAT took the first position in four of the categories that saw Trade Fair judges declare JKUAT stand the best University stand, with  a score of 92.3 percent, in a contest that attracted four other Universities including the University of Nairobi, the runners up that posted a score of 88.7 percent.

JKUAT stand at Jamhuri Park, the venue of the Trade Fair was as well declared the best engineering based institution of Higher learning, the most striking stand exhibiting locally manufactured products and the best large stand exhibiting agricultural and earth moving equipment.

Among the items on show include a number of pioneering research projects such the capillary wick irrigation kit, which is a water efficient irrigation system that could be beneficial in promoting horticulture farming in Arid and Semi Arid lands. The project that is fronted by researchers at the Department of Horticulture utilizes little space and has equally been designed to support horticultural production in urban and peri-urban areas of the country.

The Department of Food Science has an ongoing research programme aimed at domesticating cactus plant that has the potential to be a source of various food production in addition to its medicinal values.

Furthermore, the range of academic programmes in; Engineering, Agriculture, Enterprise Development, Computer Sciences, Built Environment, Health Sciences and other Applied Sciences came in handy, making the JKUAT stand one of the most popular destination for almost all categories of the trade fair   enthusiasts at Jamhuri Park including students, parents, entrepreneurs,  and industrialists, among others.

The good performance will see JKUAT bag 10 percent of the total number of trophies to be presented to the 2012 top exhibitors during the Nairobi International Trade Fair  is as well  likely to reinforce JKUAT’s resolve to champion applied research and innovation.
