Engineering Students Tipped on Career Options and Moves
Speakers share their career experiences with the students

The Electronic and Computer Engineering (ECE) Department under the College of Engineering and Technology (COETEC) hosted a career fair under the theme Navigating Career Opportunities.

The event which took place on January 31st, 2025 provided a platform to engage with JKUAT alumni who have established themselves in the industry, allowing the students to gain insights into career transition, skill acquisition, and networking.

During the discussion, Sherman Ouko, a 2018 graduate and Software Engineer at Microsoft, shared his journey from being a Traffic Engineer to securing his current role. He emphasized that resilience, diligence, confidence, and willingness to learn were essential in navigating his career path.

“As an Engineer, you are expected to be adaptable to technology. We move across roles because our minds have been put to the test. Attachment is the platform that builds you. Build relationships with people that are meaningful and beneficial to you,” Ouko advised the students.

Gregory Mauko, a 2012 graduate and lead Team Trainer Infrastructure at One Acre Fund, underscored the importance of networking. He shared how professional connection led him to a Software Developer job after his internship at Kenya Power.

“You must strive to stand out from your peers, acquire the necessary skills in your field, identify your passion and pursue certifications. Companies hire based on need not emotions, so ensure that you actively engage with your field and gain practical skills,” encouraged Mr. Mauko.

Throughout the session, students actively participated by posing questions on career progression, industry expectations, and strategies to stay competitive. The alumni responded by highlighting their own experiences, challenges, and the key skills that helped them excel in the job market.

Chair of Department, DR. Irene Muisyo appreciated the alumni for the valuable insights and encouraged students to take advantage of such opportunities to learn from those who have successfully transition from university to industry.

“We are honored to have our alumni back to share their experiences and guide our students. Their Journeys serve as a testament that with the right skills, determination and networking, great opportunities await.I urge our students to take these insights seriously, egage actively with their field and build meaningful connections that will shape their careers,” said Ms.Muisyo.

Maria Akinyi, a 4th Year Bachelor of Electronic and Computing Engineering student said that the career talk had been incredibly beneficial. She noted that the speakers were knowledgeable about the current industry trends and offered valuable advice on what to be aware of in the field.

“Each speaker shared their unique journey, both during their time in school and after graduation, making it easy for me to relate to their experience. Their insights were not only inspiring but also practical, offering a realistic view of what to expect in the industry, “said Ms.Akinyi.

Among the panelists were Rahab Ndirangu from PWS Kenya, Susan Ndagi from Safaricom, Eric Orenge from MTN, who provided further insights into industry expectations and the skills required to succeed in their respective fields. They urged students to embrace continuous learning, adaptability and professional networking to stay ahead in the ever-evolving technology sector.
