International Women’s Day (IWD) was celebrated with enthusiasm and grandeur at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) as distinguished guests, university management, staff and students gathered to honor the incredible achievements women have made in different spheres of life such as in education, science, leadership, and business.
The first Women’s Day celebration to be held at the University, was themed ‘For all women and girls: Rights, Equality- Empowerment,’ aimed to foster gender equality and inspire future generations. The Principal Secretary State Department for Higher Education and Research, Dr. Beatrice Muganda Inyangala was the chief guest at the celebrations held on Friday March 7, 2025.
Dr. Inyangala, encouraged the women telling them that this year’s theme is both a
celebration and a challenge. The event, she noted, celebrated the incredible progress, women have made in advancing gender equity, particularly in education and research.
The PS added that the theme of the event also denotes that more work should be done, adding that there were still barriers to break, biases to dismantle, and systems to transform, so that every girl and woman has equal access to opportunities, resources, and leadership roles.
“Education is undoubtedly the most powerful equalizer in society. It has the ability to transform lives, lift families out of poverty, and build stronger, more inclusive communities,” said Dr. Inyangala.
“As the Principal Secretary for Higher Education and Research, I have seen firsthand how education enables women and girls to break the cycle of inequality and build brighter futures for themselves and their families,” she added, in remarks delivered by Dr. Carol Hunja.
While welcoming the guests to the celebrations, JKUAT Vice Chancellor, Prof. Victoria Wambui Ngumi emphasized the importance of recognizing and uplifting women in academia, research, and leadership.
Prof. Ngumi informed the participants that marking IWD is not just about words. It is about action. She called for strong commitments to support women’s aspirations.
“As a university, we pledge to continue creating avenues for leadership, mentorship and professional growth for our female students and faculty,” she said. “We will keep advocating for equal access to education and ensuring that every woman here feels valued and empowered to reach her highest potential,” she added.
Further, she encouraged the young women in the audience reminding them that they are the future. Their aspirations and determination collectively shape the world of tomorrow, “never let anyone tell you that you are incapable. Your strength, intelligence and perseverance are your greatest assets. Dream boldly, work tirelessly and know that this institution fully supports you,” she affirmed.
The Women Representative, Kiambu County, Hon. Ann Muratha urged the women to be proud of themselves and own up to whatever they have and make the best from them.
She asked the women to continue uplifting one another, challenge stereotypes, and work toward a world where every woman
and girl can achieve her full potential.
“Your voices, talents, and ambitions are shaping the world. Keep striving, keep inspiring, and never doubt your ability to create change,” advised Hon. Muratha. “Let this day serve as a reminder that each of us has a role to play in advocating for fairness, respect, and equal opportunities for all,” she added.

Jane Kagiri, Esther Chacha representing the Central Regional Police Commander, Kenya Police, Head of Departments and Colleges from JKUAT, JKUAT Council members
International Women’s Day at JKUAT was not just a celebration but a reaffirmation of the commitment to gender equality and the empowerment of women. The event successfully sparked conversations and encouraged collective efforts toward a more inclusive and equitable society.
