The School of Open, Distance and e-Learning (SODeL) has officially admitted and oriented 150 students for the February–June 2026 intake.
The orientation marked the formal commencement of their academic journey, equipping them with essential information on Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT)’s flexible e-learning platform, academic expectations, and student support services tailored to ensure success in a dynamic digital learning environment.
The exercise, held at the IPiC Building on Saturday, 28 February 2026, involved verification of academic documents, completion of registration processes, and comprehensive training on the use of the Learning Management System, the University website, official student email accounts, and other key digital resources essential for effective online learning.
The session also provided an interactive platform where students engaged directly with facilitators, sought clarification on academic and administrative matters, and gained deeper insight into navigating their learning experience successfully.
Welcoming the new cohort, SODeL Director, Dr. Henry Mwangi, congratulated the students on securing admission and encouraged them to embrace discipline, consistency, and active participation as key pillars for success in the open and distance learning environment.
“E-learning is a different ball game, and I hope you will approach it with commitment, self-drive, and a clear sense of purpose. Success in this mode of study requires effective time management, proactive engagement with course materials, and consistent communication with your lecturers,” Dr. Mwangi noted.
The Director further took the students through the University’s governance structure, rules, and regulations, urging them to familiarize themselves with institutional policies and uphold the highest standards of discipline, integrity, and academic responsibility throughout their studies.
He also emphasized the importance of mastering the Learning Management System (LMS) and the Mtihani platform, noting that proficiency in these digital tools is essential for accessing course materials, submitting assignments, sitting online examinations, and tracking academic progress effectively.
The Admissions, Examinations and Records Administrator, Dr. Douglas Rosana, urged the students to become well-versed with the Mtihani platform, noting that it is the official online University examination system used for the administration of online assessments and continuous evaluation tests, and therefore requires accuracy, preparedness, and strict adherence to examination guidelines.
“We are here to assist you in navigating the Mtihani platform and other digital learning tools, but ultimately, your success depends on your diligence, timely submissions, and active engagement with the system,” Dr. Rosana said.
He also urged the students to take personal responsibility for monitoring their academic progress and adhering to all examination protocols.
