Dr. Robert Kiplimo

Dr. Robert Kiplimo, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Marine Engineering at JKUAT has been honoured by President William Ruto. Dr. Kiplimo was awarded the Order of the Grand Warrior (OGW) by the Head of State during the 59th Jamhuri Day Celebrations on Tuesday December 12, 2022. The award was carried in a special Kenya Gazette Notice Vol. CXXIV – No. 268.

Dr. Kiplimo was honoured following his efforts to promote Maritime Education and Training in the country. Between 2012-2018 he served as the Coordinator, Associate Chair and Chairperson of the Department of Marine Engineering at JKUAT where he helped set up the Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering course.

Dr. Kiplimo also served as the founding Director of the Maritime Technology Cooperation Centre- Africa (MTCC-Africa); an organization supported by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) aimed at helping African countries navigate to a carbon free society and manage harmful effects of climate change by reducing greenhouse gases and other emissions from the maritime shipping industry.

In a congratulatory message to Dr. Kiplimo, Vice Chancellor, Prof. Victoria Wambui Ngumi noted that his scholarly and leadership contributions had brought much pride to JKUAT while amplifying the global visibility of the Institution.

Dr. Kiplimo believes that Kenya has a huge potential to develop and benefit from its blue economy. The first step, according to the don, is to foster Maritime Education and Training; produce enough competent personnel who can sustainably drive the agenda.

Secondly, the government should strengthen the regulatory framework to ensure that the sector optimally delivers for the country.

As one of the leading regional training institutions in maritime affairs, Dr. Kiplimo sees JKUAT as an important resource that can anchor government’s bid to tap its marine resources.
