Dr. John Kagira has officially commenced his tenure as the Dean, School of Natural Resources and Animal Sciences (SONRAS) following a handing-over ceremony held at the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (COANRE) on Monday, July 10, 2023.

Dr. Kagira was recently elected unopposed taking over from Prof. Francis Njonge, the founding Dean who has served the school since 2018.

Officiating at the brief ceremony, Acting Principal, COANRE, Dr. Florence Kyallo appreciated Prof. Njonge for his leadership, which she attributed to the exponential growth of student numbers at SONRAS, thus positioning it to become one of the strongest schools within the college.

“The school has produced well-rounded graduates, one of whom had registered stellar performance in West Pokot earning him recognition by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).  As a result, the UN agency realized the need to create more program management officer positions for similar graduates in food insecure areas.”

Dr. Kyallo commended Prof. Njonge’s tenure for overseeing the curriculum review of the school’s various degree programs, an exercise she noted, was vital in competitively aligning the university courses as it prepares to welcome students transitioning to the Competency Based Curriculum.

Prof. Njonge gave a recollection of the journey particularly the early days of the establishment of the school which he described as “fumbling in the dark” which was nevertheless rewarding as illustrated by the outputs, such as continued growth in student numbers and academic staff whose support together with that of administrative staff was very critical to the school.

“We have a lot of potential that needs to be enhanced particularly in the field of soil science where the demand for the scientists is very high.  I am glad to hand over a school with working systems that will facilitate such training. I will always be available for consultation,” said Prof. Njonge.

On his part, Dr. Kagira appreciated Prof. Njonge for mentoring him at both personal and professional levels, an act that helped to hone his leadership skills even as Chairman of the Department of Animal Sciences.

Dr. Kagira also underscored the need for more scientists in areas such as Soil Science in order to provide solutions to challenges in the agricultural sector.

“I applaud Prof. Njonge for setting up a strong foundation for the School, and I intend to continue with the same momentum. Having spent close to 20 years in this field, I would want us to be known for research by boosting the volume of our outputs through publications and providing science-backed solutions to the industry,” said Dr. Kagira.

Dr. John Mburu, Dr. Isaac Osuga (both from Animal Sciences Department) and Ms. Penina Kungú (SONRAS) attended the handing over ceremony.
