Dr. Damaris Katsutsu, a lecturer in the Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences at JKUAT, has been appointed to the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board, in recognition of her extensive expertise and longstanding contribution to the profession.

With over 26 years of experience in medical laboratory practice and a decade in academia, Dr. Katsutsu specialises in Clinical Haematology and Blood Transfusion Sciences, with a growing focus on the application of molecular techniques and artificial intelligence in laboratory medicine.

As a board member, her role will include policy formulation & governance, regulation of professional practice, quality assurance & standards, education, training, disciplinary & ethical oversight, financial & administrative oversight, stakeholder engagement, strategic planning & innovation as well as public protection role.

The Vice Chancellor Prof. Victoria Wambui Ngumi congratulated Dr. Damaris Katsutsu on her appointment, noting that the recognition reflects both her professional excellence and dedication to advancing laboratory sciences.

The Vice Chancellor noted that Dr. Katsutsu’s extensive experience in clinical practice and academia, positions her well to contribute meaningfully to the Board’s mandate.

Prof. Ngumi added that the appointment enhances JKUAT’s visibility and influence within Kenya’s medical laboratory sector, strengthening the University’s contribution to improving the quality of laboratory services and, ultimately, patient care outcomes in the country.

Speaking on her appointment, Dr. Katsutsu expressed her appreciation for the opportunity to serve.

“I feel deeply honoured and grateful for the trust placed in me through this appointment. Being selected to serve as a board member is both a privilege and a significant responsibility. It reflects confidence in my professional integrity, experience, and commitment to advancing the institution’s mission,” she said.

She added that she is particularly motivated to collaborate with fellow board members and stakeholders to uphold high standards, promote innovation, and ensure accountability.

Over the years, Dr. Katsutsu has worked closely with the Board in various capacities, including as a Lead Examination Officer, Institutional Inspector, Curriculum Expert, and consultant, demonstrating leadership and professionalism in advancing standards within the profession.
