The director, DIPUIL, Eng. B.K Kariuki has on 04.02.2021 sensitized students of computer science and and computer technology on matters of intellectual property (IP). In his speech, he emphasized on the importance of utilizing the brain which is 0.5kg to creatively coming up with radical innovation during this corona period. Whereas, most students were not familiar with intellectual property concept, the director was keen to define the regimes of IP namely patents, copyright, trademark, industrial design, traditional knowledge and cultural expression.
Further, the office staff who were also in attendance gave lectures on intellectual property filing and how students can utilize search engines to come up with inventions or seek protection of new products and processes. It was also clear that students should make maximum utility of search engine resources available at the directorate offices. Equally, the students were given an opportunity to interact with basic search engine namely Espacenet and google patents to realize searches of their own.
Whereas the world is seeking a permanent solution to covid-19, this lecture came in handy not only to promote IP uptake but also to use IP system to generate long term solutions. Subsequently, the students were encouraged to come up with novel ideas during their course that may end up generating income for them at an early stage. Â
