Background

Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology is dedicated to excellence in training, research, innovation and entrepreneurship. Since the inception of the Gender Policy in 2009 the University has made gains and continues to achieve gender equity, equality and inclusiveness of all persons. The University established the Gender Directorate to address gender issues and concerns; among them are affirmative action, encouraging all gender to take part in decision making process and other cross cutting issues. JKUAT is committed to:

  1. Enhancing the principle of equal opportunities for all persons such that no deserving persons are discriminated against based on gender.
  2. Foster an enabling environment that promotes and facilitates gender equality at all levels. This will ensure that adequate resources including academic programmes and staff training are gender responsive to enhance gender parity.
  3. Creating and promoting a gender sensitive work environment within the University and its various campuses. Towards achieving this goal, the University organizes regular workshops/seminars and exposure to a variety of other inputs. All JKUAT events/programmes, both internal and external, have a gender component addressing gender specific needs of the participants.
  4. Enhance documentation of all the processes related to gender mainstreaming within the University and make it accessible to all. It will also strive to promote and strengthen gender equality within the work spheres through various channels of communication.
  5. Ensuring that intervention strategies encompass all University functions, systems and processes because gender is a cross-cutting issue.
  6. Ensuring that all persons with mental health needs receive the highest attainable standard of care by providing the necessary resources for the provision of mental health care and treatment.

Key Areas of Focus:

Gender Mainstreaming: We promote gender-sensitive policies in education, employment, and public policy. Our work involves ensuring that both men and women—especially the most vulnerable groups—benefit equally from opportunities at the University.

Disability Mainstreaming: We advocate for inclusion of persons with disabilities and the integration of accessible services, including infrastructure, information, and education. The directorate aims to eliminate barriers faced by both students and staff with disabilities at the University, ensuring they are fully represented in leadership roles and policy-making.

SGBV Advocacy and Prevention: The directorate plays a pivotal role in advocating against sexual and gender-based violence, facilitating sensitization forums that aim to raise awareness, provide support for victims, and advocating for implementation of the JKUAT SGBV policy.

Mentorship: Mentorship of both boys and girls guiding them on how to navigate through campus and transition from campus to the job market.
