JKUAT Intellectual Property Management Office: Empowering Innovation
The Intellectual Property Management Office (IPMO) at JKUAT plays a critical role in fostering a vibrant innovation ecosystem within the university. We are dedicated to supporting faculty, staff, students, and associates in protecting their intellectual property (IP) and transforming their ideas into impactful realities.
Core Responsibilities:
- Policy Implementation: We ensure the effective implementation and review of the university’s Intellectual Property Management Policy, safeguarding the rights and interests of inventors and the university.
- IP Disclosure Assessment: We conduct initial assessments of disclosures submitted by university personnel, determining appropriate rights management strategies.
- IP Asset Identification and Evaluation: We actively identify and evaluate the university’s intellectual property assets, ensuring their proper protection and utilization.
- IP Protection Guidance: We provide guidance and support to faculty, staff, students, and associates on acquiring IP protection for their inventions and creative works.
- IP Education and Awareness: We offer continuous education and awareness programs to equip the university community with the knowledge and tools to navigate the IP landscape.
- Feasibility Advice for IP Protection: We advise the university board on the feasibility of pursuing intellectual property protection (e.g., patents, copyrights) for inventions and works.
- National IP Office Liaison: We maintain strong relationships with National IP Offices, facilitating efficient IP protection procedures.
- IP Awareness Promotion: We actively raise awareness about intellectual property through seminars, conferences, workshops, and curriculum integration. We also encourage strategic partnerships and development of educational materials to promote a culture of IP understanding.
- IP Asset Inventory Management: We maintain a comprehensive inventory/register of the university’s intellectual property assets.
- IP Policy Amendments: We recommend and advocate for amendments to the university’s IP Policy, ensuring it remains relevant and aligns with evolving needs.
- Annual IP Audits: We conduct annual IP audits to assess the effectiveness of IP management practices and identify areas for improvement.
- IP Management Procedures: We establish and maintain clear procedures that guide IP management from invention conception to ongoing maintenance of intellectual property rights (IPRs) and reporting of university-owned IP.
- Sponsored Research and Contract Compliance: We ensure compliance with IP provisions of university-sponsored research grants and contracts, protecting the university’s intellectual property interests.
- IP Administration Agreements: We facilitate the execution of necessary agreements regarding the administration of university-owned IP and the rights of all parties involved.
- Material Transfer Agreements (MTA) Management: We develop guidelines, procedures, and agreements for sharing information and distributing materials related to MTAs.
- Funding and IPR Negotiations: We review funding and service level agreements with IPRs in mind and, where appropriate, negotiate IP ownership agreements before signing.
- Compliance and Policy Adherence: We ensure adherence to all laws and regulations concerning the university’s IPRs and IP Management Policy.
