Upper Tana Nairobi Water Fund (UTNWF) Project

WARREC is implementing the Upper Tana Nairobi Water fund Project funded by The Nature Conservancy (TNC). The project aims at carrying out biophysical data analysis as part of research inputs, knowledge management and Institutional capacity development (component 3) of the   IFAD-funded Upper Tana- Nairobi Water Fund (UTNWF) Project. This project is an output of the signed MoU between JKUAT and TNC and will offer fifteen (15) Msc. Scholarships to JKUAT.

 This is a key project whose research and research and innovations has helped in decision making especially in the Upper Tana catchment which is the main source of water for Nairobi city. Box 1 presents the project highlights:

  • Project Funded  IFAD through The Nature Conservancy (TNC).
  • Project completion date: May 2021 after no cost extension from December 2020 due to COVID- 19.
  • A total of 15 fellowship awarded in two cohorts (9 research fellowships – in 1st cohort awarded in July 2018 and 6 fellowships – in 2nd cohort awarded in July 2019).
  • Implementation of the research projects are at varied stages.
  • Research topic themes by Msc. students: Water quality, Climate variability ad adaption, Sustainable land/watershed management, Catchment conservation, Social economic aspects in water resource management, Hydrology and Interbasin water transfer.
  • 2 Journal papers have been published and 1 thesis submitted for examination
  • 1st Cohort: 1 student submitted final thesis, 2 – draft thesis,4 –  Almost at their final stages of field work,  2 at  final proposal stage 
  • 2nd Cohort: All the 6 students have done their proposals and are at varied stages of approval.
