Prof. Bancy Mati appointment of to the HLPE of the United Nations Committee on World Food Security (CFS).

Prof. Eng. Bancy Mati, has been appointed member of the Steering Committee (StC) of the High Level Panel of Experts on Food Security and Nutrition (HLPE), of the United Nations Committee on World Food Security (CFS). The appointment was made by His Excellency Amb. Mario Arvelo, the Chairperson of the CFS, effective from 18 October 2019. Prof. Mati joins a team of 15 Experts from all over the world, and is one of only two Africans to serve as HLPE StC member. The new StC was inaugurated by the UN CFS on 26th November 2019 in Rome.

The HLPE provides independent and evidence-based reports on world food security and nutrition related issues in order to inform its policy debates and policy convergence processes. The HLPE also publishes reports on various topics relevant to World Food Security.

Being an StC member of HLPE is a voluntary position (just like being board member of EBK). Hence, Prof. Mati will continue with her Professor’s job at JKUAT. However, the HLPE is a working committee, which prepares the Policy papers that advise on World Food Security. Thus, it is a high calling for Prof. Mati to offer her services to the international community.  She is up to the task.

The appointment of Prof. Mati to this position means that she now serves on two United Nations Advisory Committees; the HLPE and the UNU-FLORES (United Nations University Institute for Integrated Management of Material Fluxes and of Resources) of which was appointed in 2017. Prof. Mati is a respected expert on water management and agriculture, and has served on several boards, including the Global Water Partnership and the Engineers Board of Kenya.
