The JKUAT IT Department started its academic operations as JKUAT-MMS IT centre in March 1996 as a partnership between Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) and MMS Nebraska USA.
The centre was fully integrated into the university in the year 2004 and renamed JKUAT IT Centre. This was later merged with the Institute of Computer Science and Information Technology (ICSIT) in May 2009 to form two departments under the Institute i.e. Information Technology (IT) and Computing.
JKUAT IT Department was started in response to both national and international demand for computer training. The Department certifies that its students gain a wide enough knowledge and understanding of the subjects studied to perform proficiently in a computerized office environment and industry. This venture is modeled after the Cambridge Modular approach and syllabus that has a practical, skills-based and flexibility, making it ideal for individual and business staff development and training schemes.
