The workshop participants
The Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) and the University of Wolverhampton (UK) organized a Newton UtafitiResearcher Links Bilateral Workshop that ran from 25 – 28 June, 2018.
The workshop titled: “Learning for Rural Livelihoods: researching the convergence of sustainable agriculture, informal community learning and appropriate digital technology,” was jointly funded by the National Research Fund (Kenya) and the British Council and other UK delivery partners.
The workshop provided an array of opportunities for researchers from Kenya and the UK to interact, learn from each other and explore avenues for building long-lasting research collaboration ties. It brought together 9 experts and 28 researchers in Information Communication Technology, Agriculture and Informal learning from Kenya and the UK.
The funding agencies informed participants about the various existing funding opportunities that the researchers could tap into, and commended JKUAT and the University of Wolverhampton for organizing such a platform for the researchers.
JKUAT and the University of Wolverhampton appreciated the funding agencies for their support particularly the organization of the workshop which enabled participants to understand various funding opportunities for researchers, acquire expert and contextual input on agriculture in the region, knowledge sharing on ethics, data storage and research techniques for informal communities.
The workshop also enabled participants/researchers to gain knowledge on selecting, developing, refining and validating innovative and appropriate data gathering and analysis methods and tools, piloting data gathering techniques involving direct contact with rural farmers and community group members. How to conduct data analysis, evaluation of fieldwork experiences, writing and dissemination of findings and forging collaboration and networking including joint project proposal ideas and jointly working on bids were topics that were explored during the workshop.
