- Promote research, innovation and consultancy activities
- To forge partnerships with the Government, industry, local communities and other institutions.
INTRODUCTION
The Department of Civil, Construction & Environmental Engineering (CCEED) constitutes one of the two departments making the School Civil, Environmental and Geospatial Engineering (SCEGE). The department offers undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. Currently, the department offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering at undergraduate level. The Bachelors degree course was first offered in 1989 and aims at preparing adequately-trained engineers to take on the respective roles in the wider civil engineering fields of Water and Wastewater Engineering, Transportation and Highways Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Structural and Construction Engineering, Harbour and Coastal Engineering, among others. This undergraduate program is being offered at the Main Campus (Juja) and also at the CBD, Nairobi and Nakuru Town Campuses.
The department also offers postgraduate degrees. At this level, the department offers Master of Science programmes that are aimed at producing specialized manpower of high caliber capable of conducting research and innovations in the fields of Environmental Pollution Control, Arid and Semi-arid Lands (ASAL), Water Engineering, Transportation Engineering and Structural Engineering. The doctorate degree programme is offered too.
FACILITIES AND RESOURCES IN THE DEPARTMENT.
The Department has seven (7) laboratories; Structures and Materials laboratory, Soil and Foundation Engineering laboratory, Transportation and Highways laboratory, Hydraulics and water resources laboratory, Environmental laboratory, computer laboratory and drawing room.
1] MATERIALS AND STRUCTURES LABORATORY.
This laboratory has equipment that can be used for testing of cement, sands, (aggregates), reinforced concrete, beams, columns, among other tests in the field of materials.
2] SOILS AND FOUNDATION ENGINEERING LABORATORY.
This laboratory has equipment that can be used to test for physical and engineering properties of soils such as index and strength soil properties. These parameters include soil classification, compaction, shear and consolidation.
3] TRANSPORTATION AND HIGHWAYS ENGINEERING LABORATORY.
This laboratory looks into quality control testing for the constituent materials that make asphaltic concrete that is bitumen and aggregates. It also investigates the performance of the asphalt in terms of strength, flexibility and skid resistance.
4] HYDRAULICS AND WATER RESOURCES LABORATORY.
This laboratory has equipment that can be used for test in open channel flow; Weirs, notches, flumes, jumps as well as pressurized systems: manometers, major and minor losses, flow measurement devices such as venturimeter, pipe orifice. Flow visualization facilities are also available together with equipment for outdoor tests.
5] ENVIRONMENTAL LABORATORY.
This laboratory has equipment that can be used to test a whole range of physical, chemical and biological parameter for both drinking and wastewater. Some of these tests include tests for heavy metals using the AAS, arsenic, BOD and COD tests as well as tests for pesticides using the GC.
