Welcome to Botany

To be a center of excellence for plant and microbial sciences

To generate knowledge and produce researchers, leaders and graduates in various fields in plant sciences, microbial sciences and biotechnology capable of providing solutions to industrial, health, agricultural and environmental challenges.

The Department of Botany conducts research and teaching in the areas of plant and microbial sciences. It is one of the departments in the School of Biological Sciences (SBS) under the College of Pure and Applied Sciences (COPAS).

Our faculty members are recognized nationally and internationally and are actively engaged in their scientific communities. Our research covers Biotechnology, Ecology, Microbiology, Plant Physiology, Genetics, Developmental biology among other areas.

We have a teaching and research laboratory, green houses and field plots. Our research and teaching is geared towards solving contemporary and emerging issues such as climate change, protection of the environment, application of genetic knowledge to improve plants, manage natural resources, control weeds and diagnose plant diseases among others.

Our students graduate with a strong foundation in scientific skills and concepts that prepares them to become leaders in solving complex problems in biology.

The department was established in 1995 from the former Department of Biological Sciences. Since its establishment, the Department of Botany has grown tremendously in terms of number of students, staff and facilities under stewardship of Prof. Anne Muigai (1995-1998), Prof. Victoria Ngumi, the current JKUAT VC (1998 – 2002), Prof. Hamadi Boga (2004- 2005), Prof. Catherine Muthuri (2005-2008), Dr. Nancy Budambula (2009-2012), Dr. Peter N. Mwangi (2013-2017), Dr Shem Kuyah (2017-2018) and currently Dr. Moses Gichua.
