Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has commended Jomo Kenyatta University for its role in supporting government development agenda. The CS was speaking during the joint graduation ceremony of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) and the Pan African University Institute for Basic Sciences, Technology and Innovation (PAUSTI) on Friday June 28, 2024.
In a speech read by Fredrick Ndambuki, the CS said JKUAT had over the years produced quality human capital that continue to serve diligently in various sectors of Kenya’s economy.
“In an era where the challenges of sustainability, food and nutrition security, and technological advancement are more pressing than ever, JKUAT has emerged as a beacon of excellence and innovation,” CS Machogu said.
The event saw JKUAT Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Mathu Ndung’u confer 69 doctorate degrees of JKUAT and another 25 for PAUSTI. The Chancellor noted that JKUAT has long been renowned for its commitment to nurturing all-rounded students who excel not only in academics but also in co-curricular pursuits.
Prof. Ndung’u urged education institutions to equip students with capabilities to cope with extraneous factors of life such as rapidly changing labour landscape, high cost of living, drugs and substance abuse and mental health issues.
“Society is looking up to you to provide solutions to the many challenges plaguing our communities. We are counting on you to make us proud,” the Chancellor exhorted.
In a speech to the convocation ceremony, the African Union Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology and Innovation
Prof. Mohammed Belhocine, said that PAUSTI had emerged as beacon of excellence; equipping some of Africa’s brightest minds with the knowledge, skills, and tools necessary to drive the continent’s scientific and technological revolution.
JKUAT Vice Chancellor, Prof. Victoria Wambui Ngumi said that JKUAT endeavours to maintain high standards in delivery of its academic and research programmes.
“Together with Indiana University, we have launched a digital platform, to connect primary care teams with interdisciplinary specialists, thus delivering optimal healthcare for complex chronic health conditions in Kenya,” Prof. Ngumi informed the congregation.
The Vice Chancellor added that the recently launched JKUAT Strategic Plan will aid the university to effectively deliver its mandate across teaching, research and community service.
JKUAT Council Chairperson, Dr. James Onsando said that JKUAT is currently supporting 94 staff members who are undertaking postgraduate training in different disciplines, within and outside Kenya.
He added that the Council was also keen on identifying and implementing mechanisms to diversify JKUAT revenue sources through commercialization of research outputs and innovations.
The graduation ceremony’s valedictorian speech was delivered by Ms. Emma Ayoo Opiyo who graduated with Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture. Emma lauded JKUAT faculty for effectively guiding the students to timely complete their studies.
“Your unwavering commitment and the personal relationships you’ve built with us will undoubtedly last a lifetime,” She added.
Zakayo Alakonya who addressed the ceremony on behalf of the alumni urged the graduands to stay connected with JKUAT, and to continue learning, while supporting those who come after.
“The bonds you’ve formed here at JKUAT are invaluable, providing a network of support, inspiration, and resources,” Alakonya exhorted.
