Admission Requirements
- Kenya Certificate of Secondary Examination (KCSE) with a minimum aggregate of B- (minus) and C+ (plus) as the minimum grade in the following cluster subjects: Alternative A(English or Kiswahili, Mathematics, Physics, Geography or Building, Construction or Drawing, Design or Economics or Commerce or Accounting; OR Alternative B (English or Kiswahili, Mathematics, Physical Science, Geography/Building, Design or Economics or Construction or Drawing, Commerce or Accounting.
- A holder of a Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology Diploma (or equivalent qualification) in a relevant discipline, with credit or distinction may be considered.
- Holders of Higher National Diploma (HND) in a relevant discipline may join the programme in the second year of study if s/he has successfully completed and attained a “distinction” or “credit” from an institution recognized by the University.
- Holders of A level with two (2) principle passes in Mathematics, Physics and English.
- Any other qualification recognized by the University Senate.
This programme, Bachelor of Real Estate, is designed to develop highly skilled professionals to manage industry change within new and evolving conceptualizations of land resources and the built environment. Under the guidance of a distinguished department of prominent professionals in the real estate industry, the students will acquire the most advanced knowledge of real estate finance, law, market analysis, sales, and leasing; study key aspects of the real estate development process and asset and portfolio management; and examine how sustainability is transforming the real estate industry
The broad objective of the programme is to train professional in the field of Real Estate. Graduates from the Real Estate program play key roles in the development of the built environment as well as in the advancement of the quality of urban living through the transformation and management of real estate resources. They are trained to develop capacity for analytical and critical thinking necessary to enter the real estate industry. More specifically, the program aims to equip students for entry-level positions in mortgage banking and institutional lending, real estate brokerage and leasing, valuation and investment consulting, real estate investment and development activities, corporate real estate, or real estate positions within government agencies. The program encompasses courses taught by department and industry professionals in areas such as information technologies, finance, law, development, appraisal, agency, marketing and property management. The curriculum combines the study of finance and real estate and focuses on competencies in real estate law, structuring real estate transactions, real estate valuation techniques and an understanding of mortgages and mortgage markets.
The programme has the following general learning objectives
- To train real estate professionals to create and manage wealth in the context of the built environment.
- To establish a foundation for the graduate to practice, pursue and/or participate in professional activities/development in the real estate milieu
- To engage in research on various aspects related to the real estate industry
- To train students who will create, conserve, restore and offer leadership in changing real estate and investment industry
Specific learning outcomes include:
- Demonstrate comprehension of basic principles of real estate and real estate law.
- Apply appropriate planning and decision support tools to solve specified real estate investment, appraisal, and finance problems.
- Demonstrate proficiency in solving problems related to time value mathematics and investments.
- Demonstrate proficiency in answering questions and solving social, environmental and financial problems related to real estate industry.
- Apply appropriate information communication technologies to specific problems associated with real estate.
- To apply theory to specific projects by working successfully with public, private and international planning institutions. The course is project-oriented and stress will be put on the importance of its connection to the broader decision-making context of real estate milieu in innovative ways.
- The real estate program prepares students for careers in land development, agency, valuation and investment consultancy, site analysis and selection, real property management, mortgage lending, and bank trust and corporate real estate departments, as well as other real-estate-related careers in the public and private sectors.
Tuition fees per academic year: Kshs. 266,790/= (Kenya shillings two hundred sixty six thousand seven hundred ninety only).
