Admission Requirements
KCSE minimum aggregate of B- (minus) and C+ (plus) as the minimum grade in cluster Groups of 4 subjects which include: Mathematics, Physics, any subject from Group III (History and Government OR Geography OR Christian Religious Education OR Islamic Religious Education OR Hindu Religious Education); OR
2nd Group II (Biology or Chemistry); OR 2nd Group III OR Group IV (Home Science, or Art and Design or Agriculture or Aviation Technology or Computer Studies); OR Group V (French, German, Arabic, Music, Business Studies)
A holder of a JKUAT Diploma – or equivalent qualification in a relevant discipline – or a Bachelor of Construction Management may be considered for mature entry into the programme.
A mature learner may join the programme in the second year of study if s/he has successfully completed a diploma in construction and attained a “distinction” or “credit” from an institution recognized by the University.
A mature learner may join the programme in the first year of study if s/he has successfully completed a diploma in Construction and attained a “pass” from an institution recognized by the University.
A holder of JKUAT Bachelor of Construction Management, with a first class or an upper second class second honours degree may join the programme in the second year of study and take a total of 21 Units and 1 Field Attachment (3rd Year), spread over the 2nd, 3rd and 4th years.
PROGRAMME AIM AND OBJECTIVES
The aim of this programme is to produce an expert in cost management for both building and civil engineering construction works, well equipped with state-of-the-art skills for excellent cost planning and control, in the position of Quantity Surveyor in the projects.
The objectives of the programme are as follows: –
- To instruct the learner in the mathematics, sciences and other foundational courses necessary for understanding the structures, processes and economics of construction activity;
- To educate the learner in construction technology, materials and plant for building and civil engineering works;
- To instruct the learner in management theory and modern management techniques, and their applications to management of construction activity at site, project and corporate levels of the construction industry;
- To expose the learner to cost management support disciplines for effective design communication and appreciation of the social, economic and environmental aspects of development projects;
- Instruct the learner in preliminary estimating and feasibility appraisal of development projects;
- To equip the learner with the tools necessary for estimating and tendering of building works, building services and civil engineering works;
- To equip the learner with the tools necessary for cost control, contract administration and final accounting in construction projects;
- To develop the learner’s technical skills in solving practical problems in the construction process;
- To develop the learner’s capacity to understand research and innovation in the construction industry.
Tuition fees per academic year: Kshs. 266,790/= (Kenya shillings two hundred sixty six thousand seven hundred ninety only).
