A holder of a JKUAT Diploma – or equivalent qualification in a relevant discipline – or a Bachelor of Quantity Surveying may be considered for mature entry into the programme.

A mature learner may join the programme in the second year of study if s/he has successfully completed a diploma in construction and attained a “distinction” or “credit” from an institution recognized by the University.

A mature learner may join the programme in the first year of study if s/he has successfully completed a diploma in construction and attained a “pass” from an institution recognized by the University.

A graduate of the programme will be well equipped with the state-of-the-art tools necessary for excellent planning, co-ordination and control of construction activity, in the position of Construction Manager in a project. The instruction integrates adequate theory, intense studio work and broad industrial attachment to make the graduate market ready and unrivalled in the job market.

PROGRAMME AIM AND OBJECTIVES

The aim of this programme is to produce expert managers of construction projects, well equipped with state-of-the-art skills for excellent planning, co-ordination and control of construction activities, in the position of Construction Manager in a project.

The objectives of the programme are as follows: –

  • To instruct the learner in the mathematics, sciences and other foundational courses necessary for understanding the structures, processes and economics of construction activity;
  • To educate the learner in construction technology, materials and plant for building and civil engineering works;
  • To instruct the learner in management theory and modern management techniques, and their application to management of construction activity at project and corporate levels;
  • To expose the learner to construction management support disciplines for effective design communication, project planning and contract administration in a construction project;
  • To equip the learner with the tools necessary for effective financial planning, control and accounting of construction projects and firms;
  • To develop the learner’s technical skills in solving practical problems in the construction process;
  • To develop learner’s capacity to understand research and innovation in the construction industry.

PROGRAMME DURATION AND STRUCTURE

  • The duration of study for the degree of Bachelor of Construction Management extends over a period of four academic years.
  • The academic year is divided into two semesters.
  • The programme is practical orientated; fieldwork and studio based projects will form the major mode of training. Construction Management will from the beginning be understood as a tool for converting the intentions of the designer into a materialized continuum perceptible via the senses. For this reason the imparting of purely theoretical knowledge will be kept to the minimum sufficient for understanding construction work.
  • In order to demonstrate to the learners the form-creating function of the technical components during the process of design, great value will be attached to practical attitudes and the direct connection between design and construction.
  • The programme will also ground the learners in management theory and application of modern management techniques to the construction process.
  • All subjects in the department are taught in units. A unit is defined as the equivalent of 45 one-hour lectures spread over one semester.  Two hours of tutorials or three hours of practical are equivalent to one hour of lecture. The studio units are taught on a one to one basis through desk-crits, where tutors guide and supervise the learners on their design projects individually.
  • Throughout the course of study, a candidate is required to take a minimum of 16 Units in any one year of study. The department offers 16 units only in any one year of study and as such all subjects are compulsory. There is no provision in the syllabus for a candidate to take elective courses.
  • The course also requires that a candidate must satisfy the requirements for an 8 – week practical attachment at the end of each of the first three years of study.

The assessment of learning will comprise continuous assessment (tests &/or assignments), practicals, presentation of studio work and written examination, as specified for each course, and shall be undertaken in accordance with the general Regulations for Bachelor’s Degrees in the School of Architecture and Building
