
The Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) demonstrated their shared commitment to advancing climate resilience and sustainable development by planting a variety of indigenous trees seedlings at the Sino Africa Joint Research Centre (SAJOREC) botanical garden.
The tree planting exercise, made possible by AKF’s donation of 500 indigenous trees to the university, took place on December 13, 2024. It involved JKUAT Council Members, the University Management Board Secretariat, and AKF officials, marking the beginning of a meaningful partnership focused on promoting sustainable environmental practices to combat climate change.
The initiative, part of the greening project under the Aga Khan Foundation’s GROW Program, seeks to enhance climate resilience by promoting biodiversity, improving environmental sustainability, and creating green spaces across partnering institutions.
Speaking at the event, JKUAT Vice Chancellor, Prof. Victoria Ngumi, praised AKF for its visionary approach and reaffirmed varsity’s commitment to conservation.
“It is an honor for JKUAT to be selected by the Aga Khan Foundation as a partner in this important initiative. At JKUAT, we deeply value collaborations that not only enhance academic excellence but also contribute to a healthier planet,” Prof. Ngumi said.
The Vice Chancellor also expressed her appreciation for nature, emphasizing its role in creating a serene and inspiring environment.
“As a botanist I have always been fascinated by nature. It’s a reminder of the beauty and peace that nature brings to our lives. Trees, in particular, transform our surroundings, offering not just shade and fresh air, but also a sense of calm and harmony,” stated Prof. Ngumi.
Riaz Nathu, Regional CEO of the Aga Khan Foundation, conveyed his enthusiasm for the partnership through a speech read by Elizabeth Maina, Regional Program Advisor, Climate and Resilience.
“At AKF, we are passionate about working with public institutions, especially institutions of higher learning, to establish micro forests. These small but powerful ecosystems go beyond simply greening spaces they enhance biodiversity, improve air and water quality, and serve as living classrooms for students,” Nathu said.
He underscored the potential of the collaboration to drive innovative solutions to pressing environmental challenges. By combining JKUAT’s academic expertise with AKF’s experience in ecosystem restoration and regenerative management, the partnership aims to address biodiversity loss, improve water and energy management, and foster resilience in communities.
Nathu also expressed optimism about expanding the partnership in 2025 to include projects focused on regenerative agriculture and community-driven initiatives.
Prof. Robert Gituru, Director of SAJOREC, lauded the impact of the tree-planting initiative, highlighting SAJOREC’s commitment to preserving and promoting indigenous tree species within the botanical garden.
“At SAJOREC, we are deeply committed to expanding the diversity of indigenous trees in this botanical garden. These species are vital for maintaining ecological balance and play a critical role in preserving our natural heritage.” Prof. Gituru observed.
He also highlighted the importance of indigenous trees in supporting biodiversity, improving soil health, and building resilience to climate change. Prof. Gituru lauded the partnership between AKF and JKUAT, noting that it aligns perfectly with SAJOREC’s mission to promote sustainable environmental practices.
Prof. Gituru concluded by reaffirming SAJOREC’s commitment to supporting such initiatives and enhancing the botanical garden as a hub for research, education, and conservation.
