19 Officers Trained on Occupational Safety and Health

The Institute of Energy and Environmental Technology (IEET) at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) held a closing ceremony to mark the successful completion of its Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) course, attended by industry experts from various public and private institutions.

The ceremony that took place on Friday 9, August 2024, was a celebration of the achievements of the 19 participants, who underwent rigorous training over the past four weeks. The course was designed to not only equip professionals with essential knowledge and skills but also ensure workplace safety, preventing occupational hazards, and promoting health and well-being in various industries.

Speaking during the closing ceremony, the Director of IEET Prof. Joseph Kamau commended the participants for their dedication and emphasized the critical role that occupational safety and health play in the development of Kenya’s industrial sector. He noted that the skills acquired during the course would be instrumental in enhancing workplace safety standards and reducing the incidence of work-related accidents and illnesses.

“Your commitment to learning and your passion for improving safety standards in your respective fields is commendable. As you return to your workplaces, I urge you to be ambassadors of safety and health, ensuring that the knowledge you have gained here is put into practice,” advised Prof. Kamau.

continuous learning and staying updated with the latest safety regulations and best practices. He further encouraged the participants to pursue professional development in occupational safety and health.

“JKUAT is a leader in providing specialized training in occupational safety and health, contributing to the enhancement of workplace standards across Kenya and beyond. The university remains committed to offering programs that address the needs of various industries, ensuring that professionals are well-equipped to handle the challenges of modern work environments,” noted Dr. Mburu.

While lauding IEET for the opportunity, the cohort’s class representative, Mr. Fredrick Warega who also works for the County Government of Homabay stated that, “this course has been incredibly enlightening. The practical sessions and case studies have provided me with a deeper understanding of how to identify and mitigate potential hazards in the workplace. I feel more confident in my ability to contribute to a safer working environment.”

Certificates of completion were awarded to all participants, symbolizing their readiness to implement the safety and health measures they had learned.
