11,000 Students Begin Their Academic Journey at JKUAT – Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology

Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) on Tuesday September 1, welcomed parents and guardians accompanied their sons and daughters set to begin a new chapter of their academic lives.

The arrival of the first year students triggered a hive of activity across the University, with college administrators and staff working to facilitate registration, orientation, accommodation, and other essential services as the newcomers settled into university life.

The University is set to admit over 11,000 students for the 2026/2027 academic year, comprising 10,000 undergraduate and 1,500 postgraduate students, underscoring its continued commitment to expanding access to quality higher education.

The students are distributed across the University’s colleges and campuses, with the College of Human Resource Development (COHRED) receiving the highest number at 3,461 students, followed by the College of Pure and Applied Sciences (COPAS) with 2,268, the College of Health Sciences (COHES) with 1,708, and the College of Engineering and Technology (COETEC) with 1,581. The College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (COANRE) received 634 students, while Karen Campus received 621 and Mombasa Campus 14 students.

JKUAT, renowned for its strong focus on agriculture, engineering, technology, health sciences, and other specialised fields, offers students a multidisciplinary learning environment that combines academic knowledge with practical skills, research, innovation, and entrepreneurship.

Welcoming the students, Vice Chancellor Prof. Victoria Ngumi assured them and their parents of the University’s commitment to providing a supportive learning environment that nurtures academic excellence, personal growth, innovation, and professional development.

“You have made the right choice by joining JKUAT. As you begin this new chapter, I encourage you to embrace every opportunity to learn, innovate, discover your potential, and prepare yourselves to make a meaningful contribution to society,” said Prof. Ngumi.

The Vice Chancellor also toured various registration and orientation points, interacting with students and welcoming them to the University.

Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic Affairs, Prof. Robert Kinyua, also welcomed the students, urging them to remain focused on their studies, make the most of the learning opportunities available, and uphold the values and standards of the University throughout their academic journey.

For the students, joining JKUAT marked the beginning of an exciting new chapter. Emanuel Kakai, a first-year Bachelor of Botany student, expressed his excitement about joining the University, describing the experience as an opportunity to pursue his academic interests, gain new knowledge, and embrace the experiences that come with university life.
