University intensifies bid to go green

A four day intensive sensitization exercise aimed at popularizing various tents of ISO 14001:2004 on Environmental Management Systems to JKUAT community successfully ended, on Friday October 26, 2012.

Having actualized ISO 9001:2008 certification on Quality Management Systems, the awareness programme has now widened JKUAT’s readiness to realize ISO 14001:2004 certification, before the fall of 2012. The process that began in April 2010 has seen the university achieve considerable progress in several fronts including conducting the initial environment review, appointment of Environmental Management Representative (EMR) and development of the University Environmental Policy.

The university has opted to voluntarily implement and comply with best global practices in environmental management governed by local and international regulations. ISO 14001:2004 specifies practical guidelines on principles, systems and supporting techniques on environmental management. Under this ISO family, the university is required to effect sporadic environmental performance audits and evaluation.

Besides reducing environmental risks and effective utilization of resources, the university is poised to enhance her competitiveness for external research funding upon certification.
