Students Elections in top gear

Campaigns to elect 36 officials of the new look central student union body; the Jomo Kenyatta University Students Union (JKUSO) that kicked off September 30 2009 are in top gear in all the university’s campuses attracting over 100 contenders, who have crammed the campuses with campaign posters to ensure their messages reached the largest number of ‘comrades’, as university students in Kenya fondly call themselves.

According to Dr. Marangi Mbogho , the University Dean of students who is the returning officer; arrangements for the elections were proceeding on well and ballot boxes and papers had been secured and an Electoral Commission put in place with the main campus in Juja providing the chairman while each of the other three campuses brought in a commissioner and clerk respectively to manage the elections to be held on Thursday October 15 2009.

As luck would have it two contenders; Patrick Mwangi and Chris Nganga have already secured their positions as vice chairman and secretary general following the disqualification on a JKUSO constitutional technicality of their only contenders. The new JKUSO constitution now operational saw the demobilization of the three unions (JKUHRDA, JKUADSA, JKUITCSO) then existing under the former constitution into a single JKUSO union following recommendations by stakeholders, mainly students.
