After weeks of campaigning and grueling television interviews, comrades at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology went to the polls Tuesday, October 29, 2013 to vote in their a new team of student leaders for various posts in the student Governing Council ; Jomo Kenyatta University Students Organization (JKUSO).
The polls which begun at the crack of dawn saw students come out in their hundreds to vote in eight new faces who will take charge of the Governing Council for the next one year upon swearing in.
After anxious hours of waiting for the outcome of the peaceful polls, the Returning Officer Ms. Emma Omulokoli declared the results.
Kipkalya Felix is the new JKUSO chairperson elect after trouncing his only challenger Kevin Kidambasi in the hotly contested polls. Kipkalya garnered 4698 votes against Dimabasi’s 2160 votes.
In a surprising twist, Ms. Maimuna Said floored three male opponents with a landslide to emerge the first female candidate to be elected the Vice Chairperson in the student Governing Council with 3,651 votes.
The powerful of post of Secretary General will now be occupied by Fundi Davis with 2, 067 votes, against his closest challenger Miruka Gwada who managed 1847 votes. Moses Muhia came third with 1,348 votes. The other two contestants for the Secretary General position were Michael Otunga and Okello Fred who garnered 966 and 540 votes respectively.
Tedd Gatobu is the incoming Finance Secretary while the External Affairs Secretary docket will be manned by Elizabeth Gathii. the Academic Secretary office will be occupied by Elija Nga’nga’ while Kijuba Kidum will be the one to look after the welfare of students sportsmen and women. The post of Catering and Accommodation Secretary went to Kibet Fridah Jerobon.
Dinning with fate and plenty of luck is Dennis Macharia who is the JKUSO Entertainment Secretary elect after vying for the position unopposed. The elected official are now waiting to be sworn in before formally assuming office.
