The JKUAT Rugby Team, also known as the Cougars, has received a major morale booster from the Sports Options — a Nairobi-based sports consultancy firm —following the donation of twenty three brand new sets of rugby uniform to the team, Friday, October 5, 2018.

During the presentation ceremony of the kits from the Managing Director, Sports Options, Mr. Aggrey Chabeda, the Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Academic Affairs, Prof. Robert Kinyua, thanked the firm for their generous gesture towards supporting the JKUAT team as well as nurturing talent in Kenya.

Prof. Kinyua said the branded kits (jerseys, socks and shorts) valued at Kenya shillings, 250, 000 will go a long way in boosting the morale of the Rugby players as the team prepares to participate in the Varsity League Rugby Tournament where the JKUAT Cougars are expected to battle it out with other teams drawn from local universities at the CUEA sports grounds starting Saturday, October 6, 2018.

Prof. Kinyua assured the firm that “the JKUAT team will do its best to perform well in the tournament” and urged Sports Options to consider “extending the support to other sporting disciplines within the University to encourage more students to troop back to the playing fields.”

Mr. Chabeda underscored the importance of sports to the students’ growth and development and observed that in the developed world, institutions of higher learning have leveraged on sports to brand themselves and as a way of attracting potential students to their universities.

Appreciating the challenges facing most local institutions, Mr. Chabeda who was accompanied by Business Development Manager, Mr Andrew Motari pledged to explore ways and opportunities to bring more partners on board to support sports amongst youth in Kenyan universities through internships and scholarships.

Mr. Chabeda said Sports Options is keen to support talent in Kenya’s fastest growing sports, rugby, through the Varsity League, in partnership with the Kenya University Sports Association by organizing the inaugural tournament that will see universities compete under a well-structured format designed by Sports Options.

He said the focus of the event is “to develop talent and also give them life skills that they can apply to address the challenges in life.”

According to Sports Options, eight selected universities have been pooled in two groups to play a round robin format over five weeks running from 29th September to 27th October. “The top two universities in each pool will qualify for the Varsity League semi-finals that will be held in Nakuru County at Egerton University. The first seeded teams in each pool will play the second-seeded team of either pool, whose finals will be held in Nairobi.

Present during the function was the Acting Sports and Games Director, Mr. Moses Ondeng and the Sports and Games Officer, Mr. Kizito Mukwana. Mr. Ondeng said “the initiative will help to promote talent and make playing for the university team more attractive than clubs and further encourage other students to aspire to join the university team,” he concluded.
