The Master of Science program in Environmental Engineering and Management prepares motivated students for leadership in environmental engineering practice and management. The program equips students with the fundamentals of environmental engineering and management, and imparts skills to develop solutions for environmental problems, which typically involve a complex blend of technical, regulatory, social, and management challenges. Graduates of this program will be competent in water quality engineering, environmental process and systems modeling, project management and pollution prevention. A strong emphasis is placed on research and practical problem solving in areas of environmental engineering, design, and management.
The country needs personnel with specialized training in Environmental Engineering and Management. Currently no University in Kenya offers postgraduate programs in Environmental Engineering. The Environmental Engineering and Management program in the Biomechanical and Environmental Engineering Department will produce specialists with the capacity to formulate policy on Environmental Engineering and undertake design and other specialized assignments in the same field. The program accommodates applicants with backgrounds in Soil, Water & Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, and other relevant Engineering backgrounds. However, students with undergraduate science-based degrees are also admissible into the program and will be required to audit courses to cover deficiencies and enhance their success in the program.
This program emphasizes the importance of fundamental science, interdisciplinary inquiry, quantitative analysis, rational decision-making and design. Graduates of this program will have the capacity to contribute as leaders and environmental technical experts in industry as well as government.
The common regulations for Masters’ degrees in the Faculty shall apply.
Candidates for the M.Sc. in Environmental Engineering and Management program should have a minimum of:
- Second Class Honours (Upper Division) degree in Soil, Water & Environmental Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering or Applied Science from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, or
- Second Class Honours (Lower Division) degree as in Soil, Water & Environmental Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering or Applied Science from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology with relevant research experience as evidenced by publications, or
- An equivalent degree recognized by the University Senate.
