Message from the Dean

I welcome you to the School of Mathematical Sciences (SMS), and thank you for visiting our website. This school hosts over 3500 students who are being mentored by highly qualified Faculty, and is currently the biggest school in JKUAT, with respect to number of programmes domiciled herein, and registered students.

Here, you will find information regarding programmes that we offer, details of our staff (both Faculty and Support), collaborations and other important pieces of information. I therefore encourage you to interact with this website extensively.

The   School  is the only one that offers Bachelor of Science in Operations Research in Africa, and is amongst the three prestigious Universities  within Africa that endeavor into training Bachelor of Science in Financial Engineering. These are extremely innovative programmes that address emerging issues, and have helped curtail the effects of our world’s ever metamorphosing problems.  Evidently, I have no iota of doubt, that this school is a global leader in Mathematical Sciences, which is in line with our University’s Vision.

In addition to the two, other undergraduate programmes offered in SMS are; Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Computer Science, Bachelor of Science in Industrial Mathematics, Bachelor of Science in Bio-statistics, Bachelor of Science in Actuarial Science, and Bachelor of Science in Statistics. For all these, we have two  intakes  annually;  that  is  May and  September.

For graduate  studies relating to each of the mentioned undergraduate programmes, our admission is based on needs that emerge from time to time. Accordingly, interested persons are advised to liaise with the respective heads of  academic departments within this school.  Just to reiterate, and as already alluded to, the school  runs Undergraduate, Post Graduate Diplomas, Masters, and Doctorate programmes at the main campus of our University and at our Kisii, Eldoret, Mombasa, Karen and Nairobi CBD campuses.

Onto to the foregoing,  the school offers a Bridging Certificate Course in  Mathematics (BCM), for  those intending to  improve on their Mathematical Skills. The said BCM has three intakes every year,  (January, May, September). Related to the BCM, the school offers short training in various statistical tools like statistical programming languages, simulation techniques, computational skills, scientific document processing, scientific presentation skills, science communication, just to mention some.

As  we  engage  with challenges  facing  higher education globally, we  are by choice dedicated  to making  decisions  that strengthen our school, create a conducive environment for our students and staff as they pursue new frontiers of knowledge and position themselves for success.

Being a dynamic and robust school, there are other vast interests and talents that we nurture.  For instance, we have chosen to be very active  in sports  and other extra-curriculum activities. In these, our members offer leadership in unique ways, and are engaged in various community development activities. In line with this, I congratulate one  of  our Faculty, Dr. Peter Kamaku, who  has been  accredited by FIFA as an International Soccer Referee.

Finally, I am grateful to everyone for associating with, and being part of this great school. It is a great honour to be the captain of such a dedicated team, and may you always know that I do not take your support for granted.  To our esteemed visitors, please take a moment to also visit our departmental  websites, follow us on  social media  and keep up with all of our activities. Thank you.

Prof. George Otieno Orwa – Dean of the School.
