There have been tough questions for the Government and the Country at large as the COVID-19 spreads. As the Corona Virus (COVID-19) was declared a public health emergency, members of the public health community in Kenya and other parts of the world stepped up to offer the wealth of experience and expertise in areas related to mitigating the impact of the pandemic. Dr. Nzioki J. Mativo, a lecturer at the school of Public health in JKUAT Main campus and a member of Amnesty International-Kenya Chapter has won a United Nations research grant. The grant aims at reviewing the status of domestication of the human rights to water and sanitation, and measures to ‘Leaving No One Behind’ (LNOB) actors in wash in eight (8) countries in Africa, Asia and the pan-European region. Treatment of water differs from community to community depending on the volumes of water accessing the treatment plant. Water runoff from the surface will more often than not require more filtration, and subsequent treatment because of the debris as opposed to ground water. Due to the importance of water in everyday public health activities and probability of contamination, it is important that proper treatment and removal of agents that may cause disease occurs. How this is done encompasses an important role of public health trainees.
With the global COVID19 pandemic, measures that help to preserve healthy environments and help slow the spread of viruses are important. One of the things that is useful in preserving health environments is ventilation. When considering building sanitation, good ventilation is one thing that supplies fresh air which is important for human beings occupying the building. The field of public Health is constituted by many professional disciplines. These include but are not limited to behavioral and scientific fields like environmental sciences, health education, behavioral sciences, health services administration, social work, nursing and medicine. Community diagnosis as one of the components that constitutes public health. It observes collective and societal indicators over and above the awareness of the local setting so that one can determine the community health needs. The School of Public Health facilitates the area of community diagnosis for the School of Medicine. The team visited Kilifi earlier this year.
The obligation to advance health involves approval of building plans. County governments are responsible for ensuring constructed buildings are safe for human habitation. Public health officers attached at county offices utilize the Governments planning control. Approvals done in Kenya include county government approvals, NEMA approvals and project registration by National Construction Authority (NCA). It is therefore important that Public Health students have hands on experience in this practical exercise.
The design and construction of drainage and conservation systems should be based on sound engineering. This is to ensure that water sources that may cause flooding, stagnation, pollution of underground sources are managed. The obvious health risks such as breeding sites for vectors, pathogen incursion increasing risk of diseases, damage of water supply and contamination of domestic water sources should be avoided. It is with this aim that students of Public Health are exposed to field work that they may develop a practical understanding of theory.
