Prof. Viviene Njeri Matiru is the new Director of the Alumni and International Students Office (ALISO). The Associate Professor of Microbiology has taken over from the outgoing Director, Dr. Churchill Saoke, who has served in that capacity since April 2017.
During the handing over ceremony held at the ALISO offices on Monday, July 6, 2020, Prof. Matiru commended the outgoing Director for the initiatives and progress made under his tenure and asserted that she will be building upon them to take the office to the next level.
“I look forward to working with the team to improve the affairs of the international students, and to strengthen our alumni network as a University. We have to spearhead more engagement with our alumni to ensure they become part and parcel of the University, and even make key contributions towards its progress,” she added.
Prof. Viviene Matiru has served in the University since 1993, rising through the ranks from an Assistant Lecturer, to Lecturer, Senior lecturer, then to her current designation as an Associate Professor of Microbiology in the Department of Botany, and Director ALISO. She holds a PhD in Microbiology from the University of Cape Town, a Masters of Science in Plant Pathology from the University of Philippines, and a Bachelor of Education Science (Botany and Zoology) from the University of Nairobi.
“Drawing from my international experiences, I hope to enrich our very own ALISO and make it more vibrant,” she concluded.
