Prof. Mati Joins the UN Committee on World Food Security

Prof. Bancy Mati has been appointed by the Bureau of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) to serve as a member of the Steering Committee of the High Level Panel of Experts on Food Security and Nutrition (HLPE) for a period of 2 years.

In an appointment letter signed by His Excellency Amb. Mario Arvelo, Chairperson of the CFS, Prof. Mati joins a team of 15 experts from all over the world. She is one of the two Africans to serve on the steering committee.

Domiciled at the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nation, HLPE was created in October 2009 with the aim of facilitating policy debates and inform policy making by providing independent, comprehensive and evidence-based analysis and advice at the request of CFS. It also publishes reports on various topics relevant to world food security.

Prof. Mati, who serves as the Director at JKUAT’s Water Research and Resource Center (WARREC), has extensive research experience on land and water management for agriculture not only in Kenya but across the continent. She now serves on two United Nations Advisory Committees including the United Nations Institute for Integrated Management of Material Fluxes and Resources.

Prof. Mati has over 150 publications in refereed journals, books, book chapters, training manuals, research reports, developing Policy and Strategy documents and has produced 9 documentary films on land and water management, one of which won her 1st prize in Africa, awarded by Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA) in 2013. She has made key note presentations at national and international fora.

The mandate of the Steering Committee will commence on October 18, 2019, at the closure of the 46th Session of the CFS, and will end in 2021 at the end of the 48th Session.
