New Council Takes Office

The new Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology Council, appointed last month was today officially inaugurated in a ceremony presided over by the varsity’s Chancellor, Prof. Francis Gichaga. The new Council of nine members and led by Dr. Ekuru Aukot will take charge of the university for the next four years.

In his inauguration address to the Council, Prof. Gichaga challenged the team to familiarize themselves with various instruments critical in the management of the university in order to effectively execute their mandate.

“The role of the Council is enormous as the entire university will be looking to you for direction. Your activities and deliberations during your meetings should at all times be guided by the University’s Vision and Mission”, averred Prof. Gichaga.

The Chancellor further urged Dr. Aukot’s team to promote and sustain teaching and research to international standards of excellence; encouraging and providing opportunities for students and staff to develop and apply their knowledge and skills.

The Vice Chancellor Prof. Mabel Imbuga paid glowing tribute to the outgoing Council for a job well done and wished them well in their future undertakings, noting that Eng. Riungu’s leadership had made enormous contributions to the university in barely two years.

In his farewell address, Eng. Riungu thanked the appointing authority for according him the opportunity to serve JKUAT as Council Chair. Eng. Riungu noted that during his tenure, the institution had experienced accelerated growth and urged the new council to sustain the development momentum that his team had initiated.

On the incoming Council, Prof. Imbuga thanked the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology for seconding men and women of great repute and diverse professional backgrounds to JKUAT Council.
“I wish to reassure the new Council of our commitment to work together for the benefit of not only our stakeholders but also for the greater good of the nation”, Prof. Imbuga noted.

Dr. Ekuru Aukot who will sit at the helm of the new Council expressed gratitude for being appointed to the Council. He pledged to cooperate with other organs of the university for the good of the university which he noted, had become a household name of global repute.

The new Council is chaired by Dr. Ekuru Aukot. Other members include: Ms. Bertha Joseph Dena, Ambassador Steven Loyatum, Dr. Rosa Muraguri Mwololo, Joseph K. Tanui, and Dr. Khadija Sood Shikely; PS Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology (MoHEST), PS Ministry of Finance and the Vice Chancellor (Ex-Officio)

Representing the PS MoHEST, Dr. Areba Nyangate reiterated that the Universities Act provides for systematic retirement of Council members in order to consolidate institutional memory and continuity.
The appointment and inauguration of the new Council is in keeping with the recently enacted Universities Act 2012 which provides for both legal and institutional frameworks for establishment, accreditation and development of university education as well as governance of institutions of higher learning in the country.
